Amen.

Introducing words

The Artists Ash Wednesday has a long tradition in Würzburg. Already in the 1970s, under my pre-predecessor Bishop Dr. Josef Stangl, it was quite natural a fixed date during the course of the year. Bishop Dr. Paul-Werner Scheele consciously continued this tradition and cultivated it during his term of office with great dedication and enthusiasm. For him the meeting of regional artists was not just any date, but a matter of personal importance. So there was a foundation here in the Diocese of Würzburg on which I continued to work with pleasure since Ash Wednesday 2005.

So far the common celebration of the Ash Wednesday liturgy with male and female artists, as well as the subsequent events and the all important encounters were taking place largely unnoticed by the public. They only heard about the celebrations from the reporting of the church and local press.

In 2008, the Artists Ash Wednesday was presented to the public for the first time: from February 6th to 24th, the space-intervention at the dome-octagon of the Neumünster Church, created by the Austrian artist Elke Maier, could be visitedby anyone interested. Since the beginning of January, Elke Maier had been working on site in order to transform the impression of the famous baroque space by simple threads. At Ash Wednesday, February 6th 2008, the result of this so striking transformation were presented as part of the Artists Ash Wednesday.

Then something unexpected happened. Within two weeks exactly 11024 visitors were coming to face up to the work of the artist Elke Maier. The statements in the visitors' book are showing that the vast majority of the visitors was open to what Elke Maier wanted to intend with her space-intervention. Entries like: "Awesome, your artwork stimulates the soul!", "Your artwork is a gift" oder "Remarkable how a few grams of thinnest threads are able to transform a complete room." It is uncommon that such enthusiastic direct and personal opinions are heard in connection with art.

The artistic work of Mrs. Maier, primarily her installations, are basing in the main on the emotional experience of the individual. Her oeuvre has therefore a rather meditative, but in any case a very ephemeral character, because she integrates the moment of ephemerality into the creative process. This transitory character is directly corresponding to the appeal / imperative of Ash Wednesday "Remember man that you are dust."

Preaching at Artists Ash Wednesday 2008 (Excerpt)

February 6, 2008, Sepulture of the Würzburg Cathedral

Today we are experiencing an unique, temporary, artistic event at the dome octagon of the Neumünster Church: an artistic intervention, made of threads, created by the artist Elke Maier.

She is straining a thread weave of almost unnoticeable white silk yarn in dialogue / that is interacting with the space.

The dome zone that is equipped with twelve closely spaced windows - as well as the lantern above - enable the light to shine into the room appearing in the weave These subtle threads make the light oscillating depending on position; sometimes we descry / perceive the light above the threads, sometimes it seems to be invisible.

This effect is even more impressive because the central space of Neumünster is not furnished during the current construction phase. An interaction between light and space is arising. The material visualizes light in a new, very spontaneous and temporarily quality. The threads are not only plumbing the horizontal and vertical depths of the room, but they also enable the abrupt transition from visibility to invisibility.

The artist expresses her personal thoughts as follows: "I perceive design not as an ultimate boundary but as a continuing process, as the manifestation of traces of movement in the room. Shape and space do not form a contradictory polarity / are not contradictory to each other / are not in contrast to each other, but they constitute a continuum of interwoven movements of light, which occur in a transition from the one to the other and which have to perform a continuous metamorphosis".

Spontaneous, the question of reality arises. Do we only get what we see or is there much more existing beyond the visible? Isn't our perception depending on our present position? Do the numerous strained threads, not also exist although we are not able to see them?

In the concept description Elke Maier notes: "I can imagine, to draw the white threads from the dome-center (the brightest area of the church) midway through the nave with iron scaffolding straight forwards to the chancel and the adjoined Romanesque semicircle apse where the artistic intervention could find its final visual focus and target point".

Even though the artist could not realize her concept concretely, she consciously connects not only different spatial elements of the Martyrs Church of our Apostles of the Franks Kilian, Kolonat and Totnan by her intention, but she also dares a very labor-intensive art project in a room-shell that is currently undergoing renovation. Her installation finally invokes the inner dimension of Lent as a chance of approach to the reality of God in an oscillating yarn-braiding.

The parallel tensioned thread and yarn lines sometimes remind us of a harp and even associate heavenly sounds of harp. At the various positions all around the black earth-covered area, (( which - by evoking the former arrangement of the Church pews - constitutes / represents the both halves of a cross, )) you can visualize the vertically tensioned threads like a spiderweb-Jacob's ladder / associate the vertically tensioned threads with a spiderweb-Jacob's ladder.

The threads are leading into the ground and are simultaneously growing out of the animated / life containing earth. They are running out of the created life into the uncreated divine life. In the course of this process... ... the cross of earth discloses itself to us as a sign of victory over death // ... the cross of earth is revealed to us being a sign of victory over death // ... we discover the cross of earth as a sign of victory over death. Although it seems to be broken into two halves, it is unified by the almost invisible threads running downwards from the lantern. Heaven and earth, the visible and the invisible world will find a touching membrane in this installation.

This very labor-intensive and time-consuming installation invokes a basic attitude in artistic activity, that can prove - in an anagogic way - to be a bridge to a time of grace, to which we are invited immediately.

Amen.
